Synopsis
With 7 Golden Globe nominations, The Brutalist is already being crowned by critics as the cinema masterpiece of the year; a colossal achievement, balancing intimacy and scale at every level of craft. From acclaimed American writer-director Brady Corbet comes A24’s highly anticipated epic historical drama, THE BRUTALIST, featuring an awe-inspiring A-List cast including Oscar winner Adrien Brody (The Pianist), Oscar nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Emmy Award winner Guy Pearce (Memento) and Cannes Film Festival winner Joe Alwyn (Kinds of Kindness). Escaping post-war Europe, visionary architect László Toth (Brody) arrives in America to rebuild his life, his work, and his marriage to his wife Erzsébet (Jones) after being forced apart during wartime by shifting borders and regimes. On his own in a strange new country, László settles in Pennsylvania, where the wealthy and prominent industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren (Pearce) recognises his talent for building. But power and legacy come at a heavy cost… Recipient of the prestigious Silver Lion Award for Corbet's marvellous direction at the 2024 Venice Film Festival and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture, this structurally beautiful and grandiose epic is suffused with Adrien Brody's soulful performance. With ambitious scope and a profound exploration of historical and personal themes - and shot on rarely seen 70mm film stock - Corbet's The Brutalist is a towering tribute to the immigrant experience.
Reviews
"Brady Corbet’s epic can handle the hyperbole. With his long-time co-writer Mona Fastvold, the actor-turned-filmmaker has forged a monumental parable about the false promises of the American dream."
- TIME OUT
"It is the boldest and best film so far at this year’s Venice Film Festival: a life writ large on the screen that deserves such maximalist treatment."
- THE FINANCIAL TIMES
"It is an electrifying piece of work, stunningly shot by cinematographer Lol Crawley and superbly designed by Judy Becker. I emerged from this movie light-headed and euphoric, dizzy with rubbernecking at its monumental vastness."
- THE GUARDIAN
"It’s not just that they don’t make movies like this anymore -- of course they don’t! -- so much as no one bothers to tell these types of sprawling narratives with this level of storytelling, chops, nerve and verve."
- ROLLING STONE
"The performances are savagely good, with Pearce and Brody both on awards season form. And it’s shot on rarely seen 70mm film stock, which means that it looks like something beautiful, haunting and strange, but always from the long-forgotten past."
- TIMES (UK)
"As a state-of-the-US historical epic, it boasts all the thematic heft of Once Upon a Time in America or There Will Be Blood. But it’s also acted with the colour and fizz of a classical Hollywood comic drama."
- DAILY TELEGRAPH
"Brody has seldom been better, bringing tremendous gravitas but also a pain that gnaws at László’s prideful sense of self, one of purpose and destiny. It’s a towering performance"
